Through the Woods by Emily Carroll is one of the most interesting and memorable books I’ve read – a graphic novel featuring five stories set in the woods – and it’s incredibly creepy!
Everyone’s definition of horror varies of course, as does the type of thing that unnerves or makes the spine tingle. For me personally, this hit all the right spots in that regard.
The worst kind of monster was the burrowing kind.
The sort that crawled into you and made a home there.
The sort you couldn’t name, the sort you couldn’t see.
The monster that are you alive from the inside out.
Each story is different but they all have that something is off feel. There are no monster chases or torture chambers or axe wielding maniacs. The horror is in the uncomfortable, the ominous, the unsettling and heightened by the imagination.
This doesn’t mean however that everything is left to the imagination. The artwork is excellent, it’s really eye catching. Often this is because of the contrasting colours used for effect, the dark foreboding imagery or simply the unique feeling style.
This book will stay with you and creep into your nightmares, especially if you live near the woods. Get it read!
