The Return of #Norsevember

If you haven’t heard, Norsevember is returning this winter in full.

I talked earlier in the year about reducing the full month schedule down to one week (which became two, which then went back up to four).

It’s now actually going to be bigger than last year’s event. It turns out we are a long way off running out of ideas and content, there’s still so much we can do.

I say ‘we‘ because this year I’m joined by some fantastic people who are contributing to the official schedule, and I couldn’t have done it without them. Last year’s schedule was a 50-60 hour undertaking that took up every break time at work, spare hour in the evening and time at the weekend whilst juggling with other life commitments. I’ve still written a few posts and put several hours in so far of course, but there are some really interesting and well thought out ideas from the contributors that I hope will add an extra sparkle this time around.

Of course, there are giveaways again – including signed and personalised first editions of highly acclaimed books.

I’m also happy to reveal the themes for each week:

Week 1: Setting Sail

Week 1 focuses on the Norse as explorers, traders and of course, as Vikings. You’ll find out about where they went, what they did there, the battles they fought and the legacy they left behind.

Week 2: The Althingi

Week 2 is culture week. You’ll find out about language, clothing, objects in the sagas and much more. This is an important week in seeing past the Norsemen as raiders and explorers and getting an insight into the way they lived the rest of the time – aswell as the impact of their legacy on modern popular culture.

Weeks 3 & 4: The Skald’s Hearth

Weeks 3 and 4 focus on Mythology, Lore and Storytelling.

‘Norse Mythology’ plays a prominent role in this second half of the month, with plenty more content too. How much do you know about the runes? Or the Eddas? You may know who Thor and Odin are, but what is your understanding of humour, or queerness in the mythology? We also look at the Norse as lovers of stories and storytelling. Oh, and there is also Loki Day…

There aren’t any sign ups; please engage with any posts as and when you wish. Writing or creating any content you want to towards the month is 100% encouraged and appreciated and I’m excited to see what you come up with!

There will be a poetry competition but full details aren’t yet available.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Norsevember Badge collection – a way for you to gauge your engagement in a non too demanding way. You can find more about it here

Any other questions, let me know! I hope you’re as excited as I am!
